The Energy of Fear
Fear is such an interesting topic. Something we all face at times. Something we all manage differently. It is a normal part of the human experience, but it is something we can master. This is a huge subject, but I thought I would brush on it with you. Provide you with an insight or two to take away.
I love the quote from Susan Jeffer’s book, Feel The Fear & Do It Anyway:-
IF EVERYBODY FEELS FEAR WHEN APPROACHING
SOMETHING TOTALLY NEW IN LIFE,
YET SO MANY ARE OUT THERE “DOING IT”
DESPITE THE FEAR,
THEN WE MUST CONCLUDE THAT
FEAR IS NOT THE PROBLEM.
I also wanted to share with you Susan’s five truths about fear. They put fear into an interesting perspective:-
1. The fear will never go away as long as I continue to grow.
2. The only way to get rid of the fear of doing something is to go out and do it.
3. The only way to feel better about myself is to go out and do it.
4. Not only am I going to experience fear whenever I’m on unfamiliar territory, but so is everyone else.
5. Pushing through fear is less frightening than living with the underlying fear that comes from a feeling of helplessness.
So remember that little voice in your head will always remind you to be frightened. To stay safe. To stay in your comfort zone. What if you tell that little voice to “go do one”. Consider doing what you are frightened to do anyway, or get some help so you can move through whatever fear it is and create your own personal triumph, no matter how small. Perhaps a friend or a loved one could help you through something? A bit of encouragement, support and patience can make all the difference. Maybe you move through something you are both fearful of together? Be one another’s wing-person.
Once you have activated your “fear muscle” by telling the mind you can actually do “this thing” and do it, you create a huge triumph for yourself. You are left with the self realisation that you can do it again and again. You can sit in the realisation that you conquered. The more you practice this “moving through your fears with courage technique” the better you will get. Conquer something and then repeat. Repeat it so it becomes familiar and you are at ease with it. Then move onto the next. Baby steps. But powerful ones.
Remember, if you can tell yourself you can’t, you can certainly tell yourself you can!
Of course every situation is different, every person is different and every fear is different. There is always a solution and if a fear is holding you back in a way that is affecting the quality of your life, I would certainly seek the help you need to transform this pattern if it feels too big to do it solo.
“Being brave isn’t the absence of fear.
Being brave is having that fear, but finding a way through it.
